DANCE STYLES

Ballet

Ballet is the foundation of all styles of dance!  A solid training in a disciplined, formal Ballet program demonstrates a difference in the Dancer's ability in all styles of Dance; even Hip Hop!  That is why we follow the BATD (British Association of Teachers of Dancing) syllabus. Students will work on developing posture and technique at the barre, centre floor, adage, allegro, choreography, and cool down, learning proper alignment and terminology from Day 1.  Ballet improves posture, coordination, musicality, dedication, and perseverance.  A love of Dance and self-confidence are nurtured and encouraged.

Jazz

Jazz incorporates many cultural elements, with its roots in America.  It changes through the eras with cultural trends and fads, giving us lots of styles to choose from today, from roaring 20's, to ragtime, to disco to techno, to name a few.  Jazz is a very energetic and upbeat style of dance, with dynamic movements such as jumps, turns and kicks.  It focuses on musicality, technique, and flexibility, while incorporating classical Jazz movements.  Along with Ballet, Jazz Dance is the foundation behind Musical Theatre, Contemporary, and Lyrical.  A typical Jazz Class includes a warm up, proper stretch and strength exercises, dance technique, and choreography.  Dancers can bring out their sass and build their body awareness and self-confidence in Jazz!

Tap

Tap Dancing originated in the United States, created from a combination of cultural influences.  Tap is an energetic dance style focusing on footwork and creating rhythmic patterns.  Dancers become more aware of musicality - the connection between the music and dance movement. Jazz and Ballet serve as the foundation for arm movements and movement around the stage in Tap.  Tap Class starts with warming up the feet and legs, moving to technique and skills building, to choreography; learning proper technique and terminology from the start.  Students will learn rhythm and intricate technical movements, building muscle memory, all while making music with their feet!

Hip Hop

Our most popular style of dance!  Hip Hop has a lot of high energy playfulness with a heaping spoonful of attitude!  Hip Hop is grounded to the earth (low movements), with bent knees (plie) and a curved spine, using movements that generate and expand from various body points, and isolations, that incorporate the whole body from head to flexed feet.  Dancers develop musicality, body and spatial awareness, balance, team work, self confidence and self awareness in these classes.

Musical Theatre

This is always a Fun Class!  Jazz based dancing combined with lip syncing and acting to produce a number typically based on theatre musicals.  Recommended for all triple threat performers.  Our studio always receives Special Awards at Competitions for our outstanding Musical Theatre numbers!

Lyrical

Lyrical is story telling through movement.  It is a combination of Ballet and Jazz technique that expresses emotions through movement, and lyrics, seamlessly moving through steps with amazing leaps and turns.  Dancers must tap into their inner emotions to become one with the music, exploring a range of emotions, depending on song, such as love, joy, anger, upset, hope.  For young dancers, these come naturally.  This style gives older dancers an outlet to express strong emotion through dance.  This is a beautiful style of Dance demonstrating fluidity and grace.

Contemporary

Contemporary has gained a lot of popularity in the last 10 years.  It is an expressive dance with roots in Ballet, Lyrical, and Jazz, also incorporating Modern movements, connecting the mind and body.  Often done in bare feet, contemporary make use of gravity, with a pull down to the ground, emphasis on improvisation, freedom of movement, body expressing strong emotion and inner feelings, using a wide genre of music choices.

Acro

Acro focuses mainly on strength and flexibility, while incorporating tumbling, contortion movements, and ballet and jazz technique.  Acro has a unique choreography that seamlessly combines dance technique with acrobatics.  Our Acro Teachers are certified with Acrobatics Arts.  https://www.acrobaticarts.com/#/page/studios/5
